Ordinary to Extraordinary: 20 Ideas to Shake It Up

What did you do this week that was out of the ordinary? What have done in the last month that made you feel extraordinary?

Too often we get stuck in our habits and routines. It could be out of comfort, or it’s just flat out scary to try something new, or maybe we’re just lazy! Whatever the reason, when was the last time you made a new goal for yourself? Shook things up a bit? Life is all about experiences and trying new things, but too often I catch myself not truly experiencing it. It’s crazy to me that we’re already half way through 2019, time just flies by if we let it. I for one, want to make as much use of the time that I have.

I’m not saying that it’s bad to have habits or routines, but I’d like you to check in and see if all the things you do bring you joy or serve a purpose. If they don’t, do something about it.

Why is trying new things so beneficial?

It challenges you. It helps you to step outside of your comfort zone. It builds COURAGE and confidence. It can change your perspective. If you only ever saw and did the same things, your view of the world would stay the same. If you go outside of that box and you experience new things, new places, new cultures, new ways of living, etc…you broaden your mind, you grow as a person. It also changes up the rhythm. I mean, I don’t mind doing the same things for awhile but if I did the same things every day for years, I would go crazy. The more you try new things, the more it opens you up to more change. Who knows, you might even find something new that you absolutely love!

Ideas to shake it up:

  1. Make a bucket list or a new list of goals

  2. Learn a new trick, like juggling

  3. Go to an arcade, bowling, or play laser tag (trust me, you’re never “too old”)

  4. Go exploring, find a new hike

  5. Try meditating…for more than 5 minutes

  6. Look around the grocery store till you find a new food you’ve never eaten (and try it!)

  7. Make up a new recipe

  8. Try a new exercise class (yoga, lifting, kickboxing, aerial silks, pole dancing, etc.)

  9. Take a road trip to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go

  10. Craft. Paint, draw, sculpture, cut paper snowflakes, anything!

  11. Plant something!

  12. Make up a new game just like you used to as a kid (come on, I know you got some)

  13. Learn Origami (if you don’t know what it is, google it!)

  14. Wear a silly costume around the house…or in public

  15. Go ice skating or roller blading

  16. Volunteer somewhere

  17. Send someone a letter in the mail (the real paper and stamps kind of mail)

  18. Do an act of kindness for someone else, bonus points if it’s a stranger

  19. Take your kids or friends on a picnic somewhere

  20. Make a new music playlist or learn a new instrument (obviously varying levels of commitment here)

If you could could try one new thing, what would it be? Comment any ideas you have below! Challenge yourself to try something new this week. Live life fiercely.
