Finding Balance
Do you ever struggle with thoughts like “I’m not doing enough” or “I SHOULD be doing more of x, y, z.”? Do you catch yourself feeling unfulfilled, unproductive, or frustrated with yourself at the end of the day? OR you clean the entire house and do random tasks when there are other looming projects you're avoiding? Especially right now as the world seems to be on pause, it’s hard to find balance. One could easily stay in bed all day, binge Netflix and never move but at the end of the day, does that leave you feeling good, or just annoyed at yourself? Is it almost as if you can NEVER relax because if you're watching TV you feel like you “should" be doing other things. But when you're busting out tasks all day long you, often you just wish you could have a quiet moment to yourself. It’s so important to be able to do both (be productive AND enjoy a bit of binge-watching from time to time) and actually be able to appreciate each moment.
So I’ve been playing with the idea of balance. Similar to the concept of yin and yang the idea that everything in the universe has two sides, “two opposing and complementing principles.” Some days it’s truly okay to do nothing but as long as it’s not every day. I think that’s where people tend to get stuck, where depression and anxiety and other negative feelings start to creep in. Our minds like to accomplish things and be productive and get things done. So we have to find that balance of doing things that fulfill us in all aspects of our lives and also allow for time and space to not “do.” We often pay so much attention to one area of our life, we find other areas are out of balance and this can also cause these feelings of things just being “off.”
So how do we find this balance?
Check-in with yourself. Ask yourself do you feel mentally drained? Are you physically exhausted or is your health not in the best place? Do you lack close relationships? Would you call yourself a workaholic? Have you felt lost in finding spiritual alignment? If you answer yes to any of those questions, your life most likely needs more balance.
Evaluate the five big areas of your life: Health, career, money, relationships, and spiritual alignment. Where are you giving your attention and where may you be lacking?
Set goals and tasks for yourself! Once you figure out what you need to work on, set bigger goals for yourself and then smaller daily tasks so you’re always working towards this balance.
